Team Canada faces Russia Monday at World Junior Hockey Championship

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a rivalry that’s seen some special games including the Canada Cup in 1987. Team Canada faces the Russians at the World Junior Hockey Championship Monday evening.

Chris Wahl with Sportsnet 650 tells us the winner will claim first place in the group.

“That makes your road through to the medal round infinitely easier because if you win the group, you end up playing the fourth-place team from the other pool… heading into the quarter-final round,” he explained.

“When you finish second, you get that second and third-place match up. It starts to be a little iffy.”

Wahl says the game should be a classic. “These are the games that this junior team gets up for. I would expect nothing less than a physical affair with a lot of speed and a lot of emotion on the ice.”

The game begins at 5 p.m. at Rogers Arena.
