Canada employment numbers hold steady

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Canada’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.6 per cent in December — the same as in November.

In 2018, Statistics Canada says employment increased by 0.9 per cent — driven entirely by gains in full-time work.

The latest numbers show the pace of growth last year was slower compared with 2017 and 2016.

The unemployment rate fell 0.2 percentage points, Statistics Canada says, to the lowest rate in more than four decades.

Full-time employment across Canada grew 1.2 per cent, while part-time employment numbers saw little change in 2018.
