Vancouver councillor warns of bad batch of drugs making the rounds

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A busy weekend in the Downtown Eastside has prompted another reminder about illicit drug use.

Vancouver city councillor Pete Fry says a spike in overdoses is the direct result of a new batch of tainted drugs. He says it’s a warning for users as the drugs move through Vancouver.

“A lot of times when these ‘bad drugs’ hit the streets, that’s a precursor to them hitting the general population in the coming days. This isn’t just a Downtown Eastside problem,” he said.

“This is kids buying illicit pills and experimenting with drugs in high schools. This is recreational users across the city.”

He says there was a serious overdose at an overdose prevention sites late last week. “There were hints that it might get worse and indeed … this did seem to be getting worse.”

Fry argues this is another reason to invest more money in prevention services.

For those who use, he is reiterating to never use alone and suggests heading to a supervised injection site.
