Surrey man cites traffic, safety concerns around development

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Over-development appears to be a popular topic of conversation in Surrey.

Nearly 100 people gathered at City Council’s public meeting to discuss development to either speak for or against projects on Monday night.

Dan Johnson was one of the speakers opposing a number of new single family homes in South Surrey.

“Sections of the roadway that in along 0a (Avenue) that would come off of 170 (Street) do not have a sidewalk,” he said. “This was another concern that was brought up, was pedestrian safety.”

He believes the city is moving too quickly and approving projects without dealing with issues like public safety.

“One concern that we have is with the increase in traffic. There are over two dozen children in the area, and there are more expected to be living in the area,” he added.

Johnson has also flagged concerns about how developments make impact issues with the border, which is in close proximity.

“There’d be further hiding spots for people picking up the border runners, and they would have a quicker access to get out onto Highway 99.”

There are more development projects in the works than ever before in Surrey, with a number of big projects slated to begin this year.
