Busy Surrey intersection raises public safety concerns

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Concerning numbers are prompting calls for action when it comes to a major intersection in Surrey.

Now, one city councillor is taking the issue surrounding the crossing of 132 Street and Highway 10 to the provincial government.

“I’m trying to find a way that we can work with the province and say ‘look let’s come up with a solution,’ perhaps even left turn signals there and work it out,” Councillor Laurie Guerra says. “Because safety is everything, right?”

Having a left turn signal, and possibly even prohibiting left turns until one is installed, is just one of the ideas she’s floating to address concerns.

Two new developments in the busy area are slated for this year. Guerra says while they are not what council is concerned with, she stresses something has to be done to improve public safety.

“From 2012 to 2016, its total number of collisions were 140,” she adds. “Of those, I believe the fatal and injury were 76.”

Council has now asked staff to come up with a plan to take to the B.C. government, to find a way to make that intersection more safe.

“This intersection is very dangerous, and I really do believe that it needs to take a lot of study and a lot of work to get it in better shape,” Mayor Doug McCallum says.

He agrees the province neeeds to step in to help.

“There’s going to have to be some real study and some real work, and you’re going to need the complete cooperation of the provincial government, because the number 10’s a provincial highway,” he adds.
