Five people escape Surrey duplex fire possibly caused by tipped candle

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Five people who escaped a serious fire in a Surrey duplex won’t be able to go home any time soon.

The Surrey Fire Department got the call around 6:30 Thursday evening, and when they arrived, Battalion Chief Brian Carmichael says the building was fully-involved. Five people were inside but they were able to get out unharmed.

“There were flames coming out of the front right-hand window of the home,” he said.

Once they arrived, they elevated it to a second alarm fire. Around 20 firefighters fought the flames and were able to extinguish them.

One of the people who lived there says they had a candle burning, and think it may have tipped over and started the fire.

Fire investigators will go back to the building Friday morning to determine the cause, and the people who lived there won’t be able to move back in.

“I spoke with all five of them, there were also three very large dogs involved with the group, and they all have friends they can stay with tonight,” Carmichael says.

He adds that its important to have a working smoke detectors in your home.
