Jury selection begins in Jamie Bacon trial

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Jury selection is now underway for a trial involving Jamie Bacon, who is accused of counselling someone to commit murder between 2008 and 2009.

Hundreds of people had to spend hours at Vancouver’s court house today, to fulfill what a judge called an important civic duty, in a trial that begins Feb. 4 and is expected to last 50 days.

Jurors were asked to arrive at 8:45 a.m., and the line-up extended through the courthouse onto a second-floor terrace at the Vancouver Law Courts on Smithe Street. It took until late into the afternoon to finalize the first stage of jury selection.

Bacon was present and said “not guilty” when asked by the judge about his plea to the charge.

Prospective jurors could not see him because he was sitting in a special box that shielded him from view.

The judge told the crowd that 14 people will be chosen to sit on the jury, but two will be eliminated by a draw once deliberations get underway.
Two alternates will also be chosen.

Prospective jurors who showed up today must return next week, when they will appear before the judge and the lawyers for final jury selection.
