Workshop at UBC aims to help women achieve financial goals

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Managing money is a challenge many of us deal with, and a workshop at UBC this coming weekend aims to give women the information they need to reach their financial goals.

Sophia Wealth Academy is in its 10th year.

“This year, we’re looking at not just finance, but all of the things around finances that can influence somebody’s ability to manage their money confidently,” co-founder and financial advisor Tracy Theemes said.

The theme for this year’s edition is economic empowerment for women in the #MeToo era.

“There are still real disparities in income,” Theemes said. “There are still disparities in terms of what happens when people have been out of the work force, for example if they’re the ones that have been doing the parenting.”

Money raised from ticket sales for the Jan. 26 event go to Dress for Success, which is a charity which provides unemployed women a support network and professional clothes as they try to secure work.

Beyond the workshop, the event will feature speakers including former Crown prosecutor Sandy Garossino, three-time Juno winner Susan Aglukark, and Senator Marilou McPhedran.
