Advanced voting starts in Nanaimo byelection

NANAIMO (NEWS 1130) – People voting in the upcoming byelection in Nanaimo will be able to start handing in their ballots as advanced voting kicks off today.

The stakes are high for the NDP in this riding, where residents will be able to cast their votes in advanced polls until January 27th — if they can’t vote on byelection day, next Wednesday.

Six parties are vying to replace former New Democrat Leonard Krog, including the Liberals, Greens, Libertarians, B.C. Conservatives, the Vancouver Island Party, and, of course, the NDP.

While John Horgan’s NDP is governing with the help of three Green members, the balance of power in the legislature is tenuous with 40 New Democrats, 41 Liberals, one Independent and the lone vacancy.

The district has a strong history of voting NDP.

About 200 people turned out Monday night at the first all-candidates meeting, which was aimed at the riding’s young professionals.
