Political watchdog hopes outcry drags legislature “kicking and screaming” into 2019

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The chaotic scene at the legislature should have people in B.C. pushing for more transparency, says Dermod Travis.

He’s the executive director of the non-profit political watchdog Integrity B.C.

Travis says this the current drama is nothing new for the legislature. There was public outcry in 2012 over clerk Craig James’ travel expenses, and two years later, then-Speaker of the House Linda Reid came under fire.

Travis says since those incidents, nothing has changed, but he’s optimistic this time around will be different.

“What I can only hope is that we don’t have to have another public outcry after this,” he says, “That the Legislative Assembly Management Committee gets its act together and pulls the legislature, kicking and screaming, into 2019.”

Travis says before British Columbians next head to the polls, they need to know everything that may have taken place in the alleged scandal.
