VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Oscar nominations are out, and it’s a big day for some of Hollywood’s finest.

Spike Lee is finally getting some love at the Oscars, an honour Thor Diakow from Breakfast Television says is much deserved.

“Incredibly, Spike Lee with more than 30 years under his belt, 61 years old, dozens of films, he’d only been nominated once for an Oscar in his entire career — that was for screenplay in 1989 with the movie ‘Do the Right Thing’. Now, he is nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for BlacKkKlansman. He’d be, certainly, celebrating with some big numbers.”

It’s also a big day for “Roma,” which is making history: it’s the first Netflix film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

It will go up against movies like “Green Book”, “Vice”, “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

But, Thor believes “A Star is Born” is the favourite.

“The thing about A Star is Born is many people are referencing the Argos situation, where Ben Affleck wasn’t nominated as a director, and that movie ended up winning Best Picture. That could be what we see here because Bradley Cooper was not nominated as a director for A Star is Born. He did get Best Actor, and the film did pick up a Best Picture [nomination], but curiously he was left off that Best Director list.”

Other nominees for Best Actor include Christian Bale for his performance in “Vice”, Rami Malek for his role in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and Viggo Mortensen in “Green Book.”

The Best Actress nominees include Glenn Close for her role in “The Wife”, Lady Gaga for “A Star Is Born,” and Melissa McCarthy for her performance in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

The Oscars will be handed out on Sunday, February 24th.
