Slow down for first responders, say Abbotsford Police

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – Abbotsford Police say they’re concerned about drivers not slowing down for first responders working at the side of the road.

Mike Serr is the police chief in Abbotsford. He says the department is taking action to try to improve safety.

“We have reports often of our members who have close calls,” Serr says.

He believes many people just don’t know the law.

Serr uses Highway 1 through Abbotsford as an example. He says drivers need to slow down to 70 kilometres an hour and change lanes if possible.

Serr says while his officers will be increasing enforcement, the focus is actually on education.

“I’m not sure that everyone does understand that there is legal requirement for them to slow down when passing a vehicle with flashing lights on any highway.”

Speeding past a first responder can earn you a $150 fine.
