30 new cats surrendered, nearly 200 from same owner since 2016

OKANAGAN (NEWS 1130) -Two BC SPCA branches in the Okanagan are dealing with a large intake of cats and kittens after 30 of the animals were handed over by someone who has surrendered hundreds of them in the past.

The animals are said to be suffering from upper respiratory infections and other medical issues.

“Unfortunately, the cats came from the same individual who surrendered 111 cats to our care in October, 2018 and 53 more in 2016 and 2017,” says Lorie Chortyk in a release. “It’s extremely challenging dealing with hoarders because unless they get the help they need, the same issues arise again and again, and the animals suffer as a result.”

The Okanagan/Similkameen Branch is caring for 18 of the animals while the Kelowna Branch has taken in 12.

Many of the cats are fearful and will require behaviour modification and rehabilitation before they can be put for adoption, according to the BC SPCA.

“Most of the cats are six months or younger, so we’re hoping that they will respond well to the veterinary treatment and rehabilitation,” says Chortyk.
