New study to anticipate labour market changes in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) –  If you’re at a point in your career when you’re retraining, sometimes it can be hard to figure out what skills will be in demand.

A new study is aimed at making that picture a little clearer for workers and employers in Surrey.

The province is funding a labour market study for Surrey aimed at helping workers and employers anticipate market changes in the years ahead.

Anita Huberman, with the Surrey Board of Trade, says a study like this has real value for the province’s fastest growing city.

“The benefit will be to really prepare our workplaces for the skills that they need, tying it to curriculum development,” she says. “And when we’re trying to attract a business into our city, there is a lack of demographic information.”

Huberman says the study will help determine what industries will be hiring workers in the years to come.

“One of the key elements of this is to determine Surrey’s current and anticipated labour market needs, to identify skill shortages,” she says. “Skill shortages are really an economic and competitive impediment.”

The public will have access to a summary of the $200,000 study’s findings following its completion in September.
