4/20 celebrations could be banned at Sunset Beach

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The annual Vancouver 4/20 event could be on the move.

Every year on April 20, hundreds of cannabis users gather at Sunset Beach in Vancouver to light up.

But a park board commissioner wants to explore moving the event away from Sunset Beach by 2020.

Tricia Barker says the park board has never actually given a permit to the Vancouver 4/20 event organizers, but the event has gone ahead anyway, year after year.

She says everyone should be following the rules, and it’s against city bylaws to smoke in parks.

“It’s not only the smoke, but it’s the fire hazards and all these reasons that we don’t allow smoking in parks,” Barker says. “And that’s the number one concern, that it is against that bylaw.”

But event organizer Dana Larsen says participants have always been respectful of the space and there aren’t many other places to go.

“The fact is there aren’t many locations in Vancouver that can really accommodate the size and the scope of the 4/20 event,” Larsen says.

He adds instead of moving the event, they should talk about granting it a permit.

Barker plans to bring the motion forward at a meeting next week.
