New Westminster passed a bylaw to enact fines against landlords who renovict their tenants

This could provide housing security for tenants

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) –┬áCity Council in New Westminster are a step closer to acting against renovictions.

At a public hearing meeting Monday night, council passed a bylaw that would enact fines against landowners who renovict their tenants.

Renoviction is the process of evicting tenants under the guise of extensive renovations to their units.

David Hendry, an organizer with Vancouver Tenants Union, says it’s a step in the right direction.

“This is the first bylaw of its kind put forward by a municipal government that actually has some teeth, has some repercussions for landlords who undertake this,” he says.

Hendry says he’s pleased with the move, adding this will provide housing security to tenants.
