Lost tourists found on Cypress Mountain

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Three tourists from Mexico were lost on Cypress Mountain Monday evening, and search and rescue crews were concerned they had not prepared for the cold.

North Shore Search and Rescue leader Mike Danks says the trio were snowshoeing St. Mark’s Summit, along the Howe Sound Crest Trail, when one was separated from the others.

Rescue workers made contact with two of the tourists, but their friend, believed to be an 18-year-old woman, had not been heard from since 5 pm.

At 8 pm on Monday, search and rescue crews discovered the woman had found her own way home.

“It’s a positive result for us,” Danks says. “We were very concerned about her safety, being exposed in these conditions because it is very cold.”

Her friends said they had been taking photos at the Summit, and when they turned around, she was gone.

North Shore Search and Rescue told NEWS 1130 the woman is in good health, and the amount of resources deployed for the search is a concern.

Search and rescue teams were ready to begin an extensive search.
