Kamloops teacher loses teaching licence after sending inappropriate texts to former students

KAMLOOPS (NEWS 1130) — An elementary school teacher near Kamloops had his teaching licence stripped after he sent inappropriate texts to his former students.

According to the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, former elementary school teacher Bryan Cederholm repeatedly texted female students, one as young as 12-years-old.

He was told to stop having inappropriate contact with students as far back as early 2016, according to a decision by the commissioner. In February 2017, he was sent a letter of reprimand and suspended for two days without pay, and in March 2017, he was fired by the school district. His teaching certificate was cancelled on Jan. 24, 2019.

The first incidents date back to 2016 when Cederholm sent inappropriate texts to former students, and connected with them on social media.

He also exchanged “inappropriate messages” with a 14-year-old female student in January and February, whom he had taught earlier when she was in elementary school. He also apparently sent her a photo of some of his current elementary school students.

Cederholm reached out to a third girl on Instagram, another 14-year-old former student. That student blocked him from messaging her.

According to the ruling, he reached out to a fourth student during the 2016/2017 academic year — a 16-year-old female. Her parents contacted school district about the incident, saying he had shown her text messages he had sent to someone else about her.

“The student felt so uncomfortable that she blocked Cederholm from contacting her on social media,” reads the report.

He reached out to a fifth former student between October 2016 and January 2017. She was 13 years old at the time. Cederholm exchanged messages on various social media platforms with him, and he apparently sent her inappropriate messages during that time.

Cederholm has agreed he will not apply to be a certified teacher at public or independent schools in B.C.
