More snow heading toward the Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — After a blast of winter weather this past weekend, another snowfall may soon blanket the Lower Mainland.

Environment Canada anticipates between two and four centimeters to fall on some areas of Metro Vancouver on Friday, and a special weather statement is now in effect for the region. The snow comes with some blustery weather as well; wind warnings or Arctic Outflow warnings are in effect for southeastern Metro Vancouver, as well as the Howe Sound and Whistler area, the Fraser Valley. That could mean strong, damaging winds hitting the area, with cold windchills, reduced visibility and blowing snow.

Coquitlam is one city preparing for wintry weather. Brad Lofgren, director of public works with the City of Coquitlam, says he’s got a big crew already working to make sure the roads stay clear.

“We’ll have approximately six trucks on the road all night tonight, and we’ll ramp up to 10 starting early tomorrow morning to deal with the height of the event,” he says.

“We try to take quite a proactive approach and pre-salt a lot of our priority routes, and we find that wards off a lot of the accumulation, and it should make the morning commute much better than it might have been otherwise.”

Environment Canada says other weather warnings could come out as the storm develops.
