Pedestrian hit, killed in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A woman is dead after Mounties say she was hit by a vehicle in Surrey Friday morning.

She was struck around 7:15 a.m. and taken to hospital, but died of her injuries.

Sgt. Chad Greig with the Surrey RCMP says it happened in the area of King George Boulevard and 68 Avenue.

“We’re advising the public that unfortunately we did have a fatal pedestrian motor vehicle collision this morning, and there are some significant road closures as the investigation into the collision continues,” Greig said.

It’s unclear if the woman was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, or if weather was a factor.

The driver involved did stay on scene, Greig added, and is cooperating with the investigation.

While the cause of the crash is still unknown, he is urging everyone to be extra careful on the roads.

“Pedestrians, drivers of vehicles, the weather is changing. Allow yourself more time to get to your destination, give yourself more space between the vehicle in front of you,” he said.”

“Even though it is cold and blustery out there, for the pedestrians, make sure that you’re head’s up looking at traffic. Drivers out there, I know the wind is blowing, the snow’s blowing — let’s keep an eye out for pedestrians.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604.599.0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS.
