Hydro crews are still cleaning up

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – BC Hydro is still cleaning up after a windstorm hit the Vancouver area, bringing down trees and branches and and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

Maple Ridge, Mission and Victoria were the hardest hit areas as of Sunday.

Wind gusts hit up to 90 km an hour, bringing down powerlines across the Lower Mainland, the Fraser Valley, the Sunshine Coast and on Vancouver Island.

Just over five thousand customers are still without power in the area and Kevin Aquino with BC Hydro says crews are working on it.

“There have been some challenges that we have encountered due to the extent of the damage and some of the access areas,” he says. “We are working to get people up as quickly and as safely as possible.

But he adds yesterday’s storm pales in comparison to the one in December, when more than 750,000 customers lost power.
