Thief damages Surrey food bank’s delivery trucks

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Families waiting for food bank packages in Surrey may have to wait until next week, after a thief damaged one of the charity’s delivery trucks.

The damage is stretching the food bank’s already thin budget.

When the food bank’s director, Feezah Jaffer, came into work Wednesday morning, she and others noticed a big hole had been cut in their fence and there were footprints all around one of their delivery trucks.

That’s when they figured out someone had broken in and stolen the truck’s catalytic converter.

Jaffer says they called police and had the truck towed.

“About $3,000 worth of damage,” she says, “Because the catalytic converter was taken and there was wiring cut and damage to the undercarriage.”

She says that money could have been spent on food for families.

“That $3,000 would be going to milk or eggs, or protein or something, instead of now going to repairing the van.”

Around 30 families have had their deliveries postponed, something Jaffer says she hates to do heading into a long weekend.
