You can smell the last-minute desperation in the Valentine’s aisles

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Love may be a many splendoured thing. But if you’re desperate, so is the “seasonal” aisle at your local convenience store!

Last-minute Valentine’s Day shoppers are sifting through what’s left of the candy and cards this morning. Jay works behind the counter at a local 24-hour drug store and says he can sense the desperation.

“I see it everywhere because I work somewhere where it’s in our face,” he chuckles.

It’s mostly worried-looking men haunting the aisles before work, picking up heart-shaped boxes of candy and cutesy stuffed animals, and Jay is dishing out advice: One day of Hallmark isn’t going to save you.

“Shouldn’t every day be Valentine’s Day?”

At a convenience store just down the street, Bharat is manning the cash register and also dealing with mostly men, rifling through aisles for Valentine’s Day offerings.

So are taquitos, vanilla-scented car-fresheners or a two-pack of pens going to cut it?

“They only pick up candies… or else energy drinks,” he tells NEWS 1130.

Wait. What?

“Yes, energy drinks. It’s the craziest thing because a customer came here and was looking for a four-pack. I asked them why and they said it’s a Valentine’s gift.”

Perhaps he has to keep his energy up today.

“I don’t know about that, but it’s the craziest gift I’ve seen in my life,” Bharat laughs.
