More snow makes for a slow-go for drivers and transit users; 5-15 cm snow expected

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It may not be as bad as earlier this week, but it’s still snowing, and causing some problems on the roads for cars and public transit — especially in hilly areas.

There could be 5 to 15 centimetres of snow overnight in some areas — including the possibility of freezing rain — and there’s a snowfall warning in effect for Metro Vancouver, including for Surrey and Langley.

The RCMP is also asking people to stay away from some hilly areas in Burnaby because they are especially snowy and slippery, including Gaglardi Way between Broadway and University Drive near SFU, and Royal Oak Avenue between Rumble Street and Marine Drive.

Meantime, TransLink says to expect crowding on some major routes and there are some significant delays, up to an hour on some routes. SkyTrain service so far is not affected. HandyDART services are down to essential services until further notice, and they are switching some of the buses over to the 40-foot buses.

There are also a few school closures tonight — Douglas College and SFU have cancelled Thursday’s night classes — and both schools say they will be giving updates on whether classes will be going ahead tomorrow morning by 6:30 a.m.

A snowday won’t be happening for most elementary and high school students across the Lower Mainland tomorrow as it’s a scheduled Pro D-Day.
