B.C. man suing over ownership of “People’s Party of Canada” name

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – A businessman from Abbotsford is suing Maxime Bernier to keep him from running for Prime Minister under the banner “People’s Party of Canada.”

Satinder Singh Dhillon says he filed that name with Elections Canada in September – weeks before Bernier did.

“We have the copyright and the Class 38 trademark over it and we used it in 2015 for the first time, so it’s legally ours and now an injunction is being served,” Dhillon says. “Just waiting to see what the court date will be on that.”

Dhillon says he’s already contacted Elections Canada, but he’s had no response from Bernier who is running a candidate in next week’s Burnaby-South by-election, Laura Lynn Tyler Thompson.

“They’re running somebody under a name that they shouldn’t be, that rightfully belongs to us,” he says. “We stand for something that’s true Canadian values and we can’t allow our name to be used for divisive politics.”

Dhillon, who refers to himself as a social activist and advocate for free speech, says a cease and desist letter was sent several weeks ago to Bernier who has yet to respond.

He’s also filed paperwork asking the Federal Court for a judicial review of the process used by Elections Canada to let Bernier use the name.
