Another snowfall warning for parts of the Lower Mainland

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – A snowfall warning is up again for parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

“We are expecting to see snow coming down, especially late morning and into the early afternoon,” NEWS 1130 meteorologist Michael Kuss said.

Assistant Chief Ron Hull with the Abbotsford Fire Department says they had already been called out to a few crashes Tuesday morning.

“If you don’t have to drive, don’t,” Hull adds. “If you are driving make sure your vehicle is clear of snow, make sure that you’ve got the appropriate tires and allow the time to get there safely.”

He says last week was a busy one, with many drivers slipping and crashing because they were either driving too fast or without proper tires. He says windy conditions and a number of structure fires also kept crews busy last week.

Early Tuesday morning, some flurries were spotted between Surrey to Coquitlam and areas further east — and that’s where the warning is in place.

“The warning is not in place for the North Shore, down through most of Vancouver, Richmond and into Delta,” Michael emphasized.

He doesn’t expect heavy accumulations in most areas, “but just enough to make the roads slippery and potentially dangerous — especially the untreated sections.”

Snow has been sticking to the ground in Abbotsford and farther east.

“That is where the snow is going to be the most substantial over the course of the day today — five to 10 centimetres are possible in those areas. Lesser amounts, the farther west you go.”

He says we’ll see highs around three degrees today.

Michael says there will also be a period of rain mixing in. “That could wash away a good chunk of the snow that does fall, as we move through the afternoon.”

He says by tomorrow afternoon, we will be in the sunshine and warming up to around five degrees.
