Second vigil planned for killed Ontario girl, as scammers try to take advantage

It appears scam artists may be trying to take advantage of the horrific death of a girl in Ontario.

Riya Rajkumar, 11, was killed on her Valentine’s Day birthday.

Her body was found in her father’s Brampton home Thursday night, less than an hour after an Amber Alert had been issued when she failed to return home from a birthday celebration with her father.

Another vigil is planned for Tuesday evening in Brampton. It is expected to be packed with mourners.

“There are a lot of heartbroken people over this,” said one man.

“I feel bad for the mother and I feel extra bad for the kid because she didn’t deserve anything like that,” said a woman who also lives in the community.

Since Riya’s death, some unauthorized GoFundMe campaigns, supposedly collecting money to help pay for funeral expenses, have popped up.

But Riya’s family says the only authorized campaign to contribute to is the one organized by Neighbourhood Watch Brampton.

Roopesh Rajkumar is facing a first-degree murder charge. He remains in hospital where he is being treated for an undisclosed medical condition.
