Nicaraguan poet-priest Cardenal leaves hospital, thanks pope

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Renowned Nicaraguan poet and priest Ernesto Cardenal has been released from a hospital two weeks after he entered for treatment for an infection that provoked other ailments.

Luz Marina Acosta is assistant to the 94-year-old Cardenal. She tells The Associated Press that he is at home, off antibiotics and oxygen and “although he is always very weak, we hope he continues to recover.”

Acosta also said Wednesday that Cardenal sent a letter to Pope Francis thanking him for lifting his 35-year suspension from the priesthood.

Cardenal learned of the decision Saturday on his sickbed and on Sunday celebrated Mass for the first time since 1983 along with the Vatican’s ambassador to Nicaragua.

Cardenal told the pope in his letter that he received the news “with love.”
