Suspect charged in Delta stabbing of police officer, woman

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – A Delta man has been charged in relation to the stabbing of an off-duty police officer and a woman outside an elementary school Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe a domestic dispute over a broken marriage may be the motive for the double stabbing outside the Immaculate Conception elementary school in North Delta. Manoj George, 49, is facing two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of assault with a weapon.

Acting Sgt. John Jasmins was stabbed after intervening in a fight between a man and a woman.

Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord says Jasmins was picking up his children when the incident happened and was stabbed multiple times in front of his family.

“They were very, very brave in the fact that they saw some of this happening quickly scurried up and knew enough to say, ‘Call 911,'” Dubord says. “His kids were certainly very brave and certainly John was the hero of this event. If he wouldn’t have stepped in, there was a potential for this to be very, very serious.”

“John is a good pro-active policeman and as a result, he jumped into action,” Dubord adds. “I’m extremely proud. He certainly is a hero.”

Jasmins has had surgery and is recovering in hospital, Dubord adds. The woman, who is a 41-year-old from Delta is still in serious condition but police say her condition is improving.

“I want to thank the staff at Immaculate Conception and the parents at the school who leapt in to help immediately, calling 9-1-1, providing the initial first aid to the woman who was injured, and making sure the kids were looked after,” read a statement from Jasmins. “And I want to express my gratitude to Surrey RCMP and my amazing wife and my children who were so brave, and had the awareness and composure to run to the nearest adult and direct them to call 911. My family and I are doing much better today. We want to also thank our broader law enforcement family and the public for all their support and well-wishes.”

The school was closed on Thursday, but police and counsellors will be on hand tomorrow when classes resume.
