North Macedonia prosecutor orders parliament assault probe

A prosecutor’s office in North Macedonia has ordered an investigation of five men suspected of organizing the storming of parliament in 2017 in an attempt to prevent the election of a new parliament speaker.
The office said late Wednesday that the five were suspected of having “prepared and implemented” a plan for the protesters to storm parliament. More than 100 people, including lawmakers and journalists, were injured.
Prosecutors did not release the identities of the suspects, but local media reported they were officials from the conservative VMRO-DPMNE party. The five face charges of posing a “terrorist threat to constitutional order and security.”
Three of the suspects were taken to court for questioning, while the remaining two are on the run.
