Some Downtown Vancouver crosswalks to get ‘scrambled’

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Two downtown Vancouver intersections will soon look a bit different, with what’s known as a “scrambled” crossing.

It will let pedestrians cross in any direction — including diagonally.

The two proposed all-walk crossings are part of the city’s newly approved plan for a $5.4-million redesign of Robson Plaza.

The intersection at Howe and Robson, as well as the one at Hornby and Robson would be reconfigured to have times when pedestrians can cross in any direction.

The “scramble crosswalk” design is already used in several intersections across the country, including Toronto, Edmonton, and one in Richmond’s Steveston area.

The City of Vancouver says the change would improve safety for all road users.

When for the change will be made is still up in the air. The city says it is still developing a construction timeline.
