Petition to end supermarket food waste at 200K signatures a year after launching

KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) – In the year since he launched a petition to end food waste in Canada, a Grade 12 student in Kelowna has learned more about lobbying and policy-making than he would in any classroom.

In the past year, Justin Kulik has managed to go to Ottawa to meet the federal agriculture minister and has collected more than 200,000 signatures.

His goal? To create federal legislation to prevent supermarkets from throwing out perfectly edible food and donate it to food banks. And he’s happy many Canadians feel as strongly as he does.

“I do definitely see the amount of traction that this position is getting just having over 200,000 people stand behind me asking that this unnecessary waste stop is truly heart-warming,” he adds.

While high-school graduation is around the corner, he notes it’s also an election year – a good time to get firm commitments from candidates and politicians running for re-election. Kulik would like to see a law like the one they have in France.

“Overall just with such a vast range of supermarkets across Canada implementing this through policy is the way to go.”

One report estimates 31 billion dollars worth of food is wasted every year.
