Wilson-Raybould still plans to run for re-election as a Liberal

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Despite her explosive testimony regarding the SNC-Lavalin scandal, Jody Wilson-Raybould says she will run as a Liberal in the fall election.

Former cabinet minister Wilson-Raybould plans to run for re-election under the Liberal banner as the MP for Vancouver-Granville.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow Christo Aivalis with the University of Toronto tells CityNews whether that actually happens depends, in part, on the prime minister. “Maybe the reality is she expects Trudeau to kick her out. But she doesn’t want to make the move. The person who blinks first here maybe loses a bit of that credibility.”

He believes there are divisions in the party. “I think maybe she feels that her remaining there allows her to potentially capitalize on these risks, as they may continue to grow.”

Aivalis adds Wilson-Raybould likely feels she has support amongst some other members of the party and in her local riding.

Last week, Wilson-Raybould testified that she was relentless pressured by nearly a dozen of the government’s top power players, including the prime minister, to help Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin avoid criminal prosecution.

In response, Trudeau said, “I completely disagree with the former attorney general’s characterization of events.”
