Thousands of fans expected at BC Place for Canada Sevens rugby tournament

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canada Sevens rugby tournament returns to Vancouver this weekend, with thousands of fans from around the world descending on BC Place to cheer on their national teams.

Gareth Rees with Rugby Canada says they expect many of the fans to be dressed up in costumes and ready to party.

“BC Place will have over 75,000 fans celebrating over two days of rugby with 16 international teams so it should be a lot of fun,” Rees adds.

“It’s short games, 14-minute games, lots of turn around. That will be 48 games in that stadium this week, but it’s very comfortable, the roof is closed and it’s an eight hour day so it’s a bit of a party but it’s also lots of great international sport.”

Many of the fans dress up and it can get very loud but Rees says it’s actually a fairly family-friendly affair and lots of people bring their kids.
