Johns Hopkins wants armed police; Baltimore says not so fast

BALTIMORE — Johns Hopkins University wants to create an armed police force similar to those patrolling numerous other U.S. urban colleges and universities. But it’s not going to happen easily in its home city of Baltimore.

Hopkins is a thriving private research institution with one of the world’s foremost medical schools. It contributes about $5 billion in economic output in Baltimore and it’s long been a magnet for top-tier researchers and students.

A bill is currently in front of Maryland’s legislature that would authorize a roughly 100-member force for Johns Hopkins’ three city campuses. The measure is receiving both sustained pushback and high-level endorsements.

The proposal comes a year after lawmakers were flooded with opposition from constituents and chose not to endorse an initial pitch.
