Justice committee to debate whether or not to invite former AG for second testimony on SNC-Lavalin affair

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The House of Commons Justice Committee is holding an emergency meeting today on the SNC-Lavalin affair.

Conservative and New Democrat MPs forced this meeting in an effort to try and invite the central figure in this controversy for a second round of testimony.

The opposition MPs say there are still too many unanswered questions and conflicting testimony, and that they need to hear from former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould once again.

NDP MP Tracey Ramsey also says she wants the prime minister to loosen the restrictions on waiving solicitor-client privilege and cabinet confidence.

“She was only able to tell half of her story,” she says in a phone interview. “Mister Butts didn’t have those constraints on him, and so I really believe that it’s important that she comes back so that Canadians can hear what happened.”

Meantime, Conservative MP Michael Barrett tells us the story is incomplete, and that they need more answers.

“When Miss Wilson-Raybould appeared the first time, it was bombshell after bombshell in the hours that she appeared before us,” he says. “And she said that we hadn’t heard it all.”

“Canadians need to have a full understanding of this issue before people can pass judgement on what happened here,” she adds.

Barrett believes there’s conflicting testimony between Wilson-Raybould and the prime minister’s former principal secretary, Gerald Butts.

Liberal MPs have signaled they are satisfied with the testimony so far and already shot down a previous motion calling Wilson-Raybould to testify.

The Vancouver-Granville MP said in a statement last week that she would be willing to appear again, if she’s invited.

The grit MPs on the committee did not return calls for an interview.
