Official hopes removed Confederate statues go in state park

NEW ORLEANS — Three Confederate statues have been taken down in New Orleans, but officials are still trying to decide what to do with them since their removal nearly two years ago.
The statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard are stored at a city warehouse after they were removed in spring 2017.
Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser says he’s hopeful the city will transfer the statues for placement in a state park, but New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office says they haven’t reached any agreement.
News outlets report Nungesser offered the idea to find closure sooner for the controversial monuments. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune quotes him in a Wednesday report as saying he thinks a park or historic site could offer context that would satisfy people who wanted them removed.
