Saudi coalition bombs allied Yemeni soldiers killing 8

SANAA, Yemen — Yemeni military officials say the Saudi-led coalition launched a series of airstrikes along the Yemen-Saudi border that mistakenly killed and wounded forces allied with the government.

The officials say eight border guards were killed and 33 others wounded when the coalition staged a bombing operation in the al-Araba mountains in Jawf governorate on Thursday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to the media.

Yemeni forces are fighting with the Saudi-led coalition against Houthi rebels, whom Saudis accuse of acting as an Iranian proxy. Over the course of the four-year war, coalition bombs have at times struck allied forces and civilians.

Rebels seized the capital Sanaa in 2014, prompting the internationally recognized government to flee the country and seek help from neighbouring Saudi Arabia.
