Gas prices spike up around Metro Vancouver

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Gas prices are going up this weekend and one expert doesn’t think they’re going to come back down again anytime soon.

Dan McTeague with GasBuddy.com says prices on Sunday are on average about $1.52 per litre around Metro Vancouver, up from $1.28 per litre last month and there could be another increase coming this week.

“Perhaps pushing us up to the $1.53 range and of course on April 1 we have the increase to the carbon tax across the province of about 1.17, 1.18 cents a litre,” he tells NEWS 1130.

McTeague says the switch to a more expensive, summer fuel blend, along with some maintenance on refineries south of the border are behind the price increase.

“BP Cherry Point — which is one of the larger refineries in the region — one of its gasoline units is down for maintenance and that’s gonna last at least a month and of course the Shell facility in Anacortes is also down.”

He says if you want to save money, try dipping across the border to fill up.

“When you do the conversion on prices in Blaine and Bellingham, the price there can range for as low as 94 cents a litre all the way up to $1.08. Those living very close to the border will be looking to save as much as $20 to $30 on a tank full.”
