DICK DALE DIES

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dick Dale used to joke he’d go into McDonald’s to get a paper crown because he was “The King of the Surf Guitar.” Dale died Saturday at the age of 81, according to his former bassist, Sam Bolle. No other details were given. Dale had said in 2015 he kept touring to pay his cancer bills. His most famous song was “Misirlou,” which came out in 1962 and saw a popular resurgence in 1994 when it was used in the film “Pulp Fiction.” In a 2002 AP interview, Dale said he came up with his sound by imitating the surf and the wild animals he raised at his home. Dale could not read music, but he called himself a “manipulator of sounds.” He said he could play nearly any instrument and make you think he’d been playing it for years.

ARTHUR BROWN DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM NEW ZEALAND GUNMAN

UNDATED (AP) — The performer of the 1968 song “Fire” says he wants nothing to do with the white supremacist suspected of killing 50 people at two mosques in New Zealand. Arthur Brown writes on Facebook he is full of “horror and sadness” to learn the most famous line from that song, “I am the god of hellfire!” can be heard as the gunman drives off from the first mosque during a livestream of the slaughter. Brown says he does not support any group or individual that uses terrorist tactics as a means of dealing with beliefs other than their own. Brown says he believes “all religions reach for the same root in the human being” and “all people of all colours and all races deserve equal respect.” Brown called off his scheduled performance at a record store in Austin, Texas, yesterday out of respect for the victims and on the advice of local authorities.

SLAYER AND ANTHRAX CANCEL NEW ZEALAND CONCERT AFTER MOSQUES TRAGEDY

UNDATED (AP) — Slayer guitarist Gary Holt says his heart goes out to the victims of the shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday, where Slayer was to make a stop on their farewell tour. Holt writes on Instagram while he’s sad they called off their concert, “a metal show is of the least importance after a tragedy like this.” Fifty people were killed in New Zealand’s deadliest shooting in modern history. Support act Anthrax posted a photo saying they stand with New Zealand and they promise they will be back. No word on whether the concert will be rescheduled.

MICHAEL JACKSON ITEMS REMOVED FROM CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has taken down three Michael Jackson items from display. The Indianapolis Star reports Jackson’s fedora and glove and a poster of him are no longer exhibited. Chris Carron, the museum’s director of collections, says it wants to tell stories of “people of high character.” The move comes after HBO ran the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” featuring two men who say Jackson abused them as boys. Jackson’s family and estate deny the allegations. However, the museum says Jackson items are still part of the recreation of the bedroom of Indiana AIDS patient Ryan White, who died in 1990. The museum says in a statement the items are integral to telling White’s story.

KACEY MUSGRAVES APPRECIATES DAVID CROSBY’S ATTENTION

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kacey Musgraves is flattered David Crosby has heard her, even if he has not heard OF her. Crosby tweeted last week, “Have any of you heard a girl named Casey Musgraves….song called Slow Burn?” He spelled her name wrong. Musgraves tweeted back, “Doesn’t ring a bell.” Musgraves tells The Associated Press she doesn’t expect anyone to know who she is, but she thought Crosby’s comment was funny because no matter how far she gets in life, her name gets spelled wrong. She thinks Crosby is “amazing” and it’s cool that he heard her song and tweeted about it. However, Musgraves says, “You got to throw something BACK, you know.”

“I BELIEVE I CAN FLY” ARRANGER HAS MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT R. KELLY

DETROIT (AP) — The orchestral arranger who made R. Kelly’s song “I Believe I Can Fly” into a soaring masterpiece feels conflicted about that work now. Paul Riser Sr. says when he first heard the song, he thought the lyrics were so simple, the melody clear and the chord pattern “wonderful.” Riser calls it “a song we all wish we could write.” However, Riser says he’s “troubled” by Kelly being charged with ten counts of aggravated sexual abuse. Many people who have used the song in graduations, church services and school concerts face the same dilemma. Riser says he believes the song has a life beyond its creator because it celebrates the idea that “there’s always something better tomorrow.”
