Trudeau fills void in cabinet with Vancouver MP Joyce Murray

OTTAWA – Long-time Vancouver MP Joyce Murray is getting a seat at the table. she is being promoted to president of the treasury board.

The spot was left vacant by Jane Philpott, who resigned from cabinet after losing confidence in the government over the SNC-Lavalin controversy.

Murray knows the file well, before this promotion she had been serving as the parliamentary secretary to treasury board.

She’s been an MP since 2008 and ran againTrudeaueau for the Liberal leadership.

Murray says she hopes to move on from this controversy and has no further questions about it for the prime minister or Wilson-Raybould.

“I am pleased that the former attorney general is interested in remaining part of the team,” Murray told reporters.

She says she still has confidence in the prime minister and notes the last few weeks have been difficult, but she wants to move on and get down to work on her file.

“There’s a lot to do and I am going to be focused on the agenda.”

Trudeau’s first shuffle in January moved Jody Wilson-Raybould out of justice, seen as a trigger for the SNC controversy. He then had to shuffle his cabinet again after Wilson-Raybould resigned.

Monday’s shuffle took place a day before the budget, seen as a signal that the government is trying to put the scandal behind them and moving forward focus on their fiscal plan.

Philpott congratulated Murray on Twitter after the announcement, saying the MP would do a great job.
