BCTF getting new leader, as teachers and province square off at negotiating table

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – There’s a new president at the BC Teachers’ Federation, as crucial negotiations with the province continue.

Teri Mooring says her focus in this new position is getting a deal done by deadline. “My top priority is going back to the table and making the most of every single session to get a deal by June 30th.”

“But it can’t just be any deal by June 30th. It needs to be a good deal for teachers and students by June 30th,” she added.

One of the key issues, Mooring says, is increasing the province’s offer of two per cent pay increases each year. She says more is needed to get — and keep — the number of teachers the province needs.

Other sticking points include having class size and composition consistent across the province.

Mooring, who has served as the union’s vice president for the last six years. She will take over from Glen Hansman, whose three-year term will come to an end at the end of June.
