Fight breaks out over soccer game in West Vancouver’s Ambleside Park

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A fight erupted on the sidelines of a soccer match in West Vancouver on Saturday, leading to a 45-year-old woman getting punched in the face, and a 42-year-old Surrey man in handcuffs.

Constable Jeff Palmer of the West Vancouver Police Department says they’re still trying to figure out exactly how the whole altercation started at Ambleside Park.

They aren’t even sure if the punch was intended for the woman in the first place.

When police arrived on scene, they found a group of parents trying to stop someone from leaving in their car.

“Our officers managed to separate all the disputing parties, [and] gather a bunch of statements,” he says. “Subsequent to that, a 42-year-old Surrey man was arrested.”

Palmer says that man has been released on a promise to appear in court next month, and police will likely be recommending a single charge of assault.

“Really, of all of the things that we have to be concerned about in the world today, we really would hope that a disagreement or a dispute over a soccer game could be resolved in any other manner than putting hands on any other person,” he says.

Police are still trying to figure out what happened. Palmer says they’re not even sure the punch was intended for the woman.
