Israeli army kills Palestinian suspected of West Bank attack

JERUSALEM — Israel’s army says troops have killed a Palestinian suspected of carrying out a weekend stabbing and shooting attack that left two Israelis dead near a West Bank settlement.

The army said late Tuesday that 19-year-old suspect Omar Abu Leila was fatally shot when he opened fire on soldiers trying arrest him. It said that Israeli troops had surrounded a building near the West Bank city of Ramallah and that Abu Leila was killed in an exchange of gunfire. There were no Israeli injuries.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised his forces, saying that “the long arm of Israel will reach anyone who harms our citizens and soldiers.”

Sunday’s attack set off a two-day manhunt that raised tensions in Israel and the West Bank after a period of fragile calm.
