Research, technical workers to strike on California campuses

LOS ANGELES — A union representing research and technical workers says it will strike at 10 University of California campuses and 5 hospitals in a one-day walkout after contract negotiations failed.

Spokesman Dan Russell says some 10,000 members of University Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America will take to picket lines statewide on Wednesday.

The union and the University of California are at odds over issues including pay, healthcare premiums and retirement terms.

Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees will join the strike in solidarity.

The biggest crowd is expected at UCLA, where senator and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is scheduled to march and give a speech.

UC has urged the union to return to the bargaining table.
