UBC women’s volleyball team celebrate after big win last week

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Final exams are just a few weeks away at UBC, but it may be tough for some students to focus after a big accomplishment last weekend.

The Thunderbirds women’s volleyball team won the national championship and plans are in the works for a big celebration. The team took home the title for an impressive 12th time in the school’s history — more than any other school in Canada.

Coach Doug Reimer admits it wasn’t easy.

“Beating three outstanding teams on three straight days,” he says.

The women’s volleyball team had a lousy start to the season, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter.

“Here was a team that started the year 0-3, and was able to finish 3-0,” says . “That’s what you want.”

Star player Kiera Van Ryk, who was named the tournament MVP, says the support from other UBC athletes has been motiviation.

“I’m sure there’s are many other T-birds watching the game online, and wishin they could be here cheering us on,” she says.

She also believes we live in a part of the country that embraces the sport.

“Vollyball in B.C. is huge, and a lot of it is in the Lower Mainland,” she says. “We really love having the support from everyone around us.”

To add to our local reputation, Trinity Western in Langley has once again won the national championship in men’s volleyball — the third time in the last four years.
