Three people dead after Surrey collision; IHIT investigating

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Three people were found dead after a single-vehicle crash in South Surrey.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation after the deaths were deemed as ‘suspicious.’

The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. on 32 Avenue Diversion under the Highway 99 overpass.

“Upon arrival, our front-line officers determined that the three occupants of the vehicle were deceased. The investigation is in its early stages and the cause of the collision is not known at this time,” said RCMP Sgt. Chad Greig

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation, but police have not offered any more details on what happened in the incident. It is not clear if the collision itself was responsible for the three deaths.

The car involved remains underneath the Highway 99 overpass where police have been taking measurements. They’re not saying why homicide investigators have assumed control, but some onlookers have been telling NEWS 1130 they heard the crash may have been caused by a shooting.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, IHIT’s Cpl. Frank Jang didn’t give many new details.

He said they are treating the deaths as suspicious in nature, but there is no reason to believe others are at risk.

Jang said there is nothing to suggest that the incident is connected to gang violence, and the names of the deceased will not be released until their family’s have been notified. He did not say whether the dead were related to one another.

He added there may be a link to another location in Surrey that is currently under surveillance, but said it’s early in the investigation.

A house near the end of a small culdesac in South Surrey remains behind police tape with police only confirming there may be a possible link between the home and the crash. Jang confirmed another location in Surrey was under surveillance but couldn’t corroborate the location.

A neighbour, who didn’t want to give their name, told NEWS 1130 they saw a man come out from the house that is now under surveillance Tuesday morning. The neighbour says the man hurriedly tried and failed to park his car repeatedly going up on the curve before running back inside the home.

At this point, Mounties have only been able to confirm all three people inside the car were already dead when the first officers arrived.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash to contact them.

Road closures are in effect in the area. For the latest traffic information listen to NEWS 1130 every 10 minutes on the one.
