Woman stuck on BC ferry for 10 hours wishes she was given more timely updates

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A woman who spent 10 hours aboard a ferry that got stuck at the Langdale terminal says looking back a day later, BC Ferries handled it pretty well — all things considered.

Steph Halmhofer says she would have appreciated some more updates through the day.

“As the day started off, they were giving us fairly regular updates — almost every hour — then in the afternoon, it really tapered off,” she said.

“There were a couple points where they were like, ‘Okay, within possibly one to two hours we could be doing this. Then two hours go by, three hours go by and still no update.”

By the end of the day, Halmhofer tells us: “They said, ‘Okay, within half an hour, we’re going to start. An hour an a half later is when they said, ‘Okay, now we’re going to start.”

But she’s not worried about taking a ferry again.

Sailings were cancelled after the vessel became stuck after running into the dock at the Langdale terminal at around 8 a.m. Tuesday. BC Ferries says no one was hurt.

At around 7 p.m., BC Ferries tweeted that all passengers were safely off the Queen of Surrey.

BC Ferries says there is some damage to the hull plating and rudder, and another vessel has been brought in to replace it.

The corporation adds there will be a full investigation into what happened, and the crew is continuing work as normal.
