Medical emergency at Joyce SkyTrain station leads to major delays

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Commuters experienced long waits and large crowds, after five SkyTrain stations along the Expo Line experienced service disruption due to a medical emergency on Wednesday.

The issue was at Joyce Station, which was closed for about three hours.

A shuttle train and bus bridge were set up between Nanaimo and Metrotown Stations.

At around 12:45 p.m., TransLink advised that the Expo Line was going back to full service and Joyce Station was re-opened.

Graham Williams was stuck for 25 minutes on his way in to work due to the delay.

“The general atmosphere was ‘irritated.’ I think a lot of people understand that these medical situations happen. I think the most frustrating thing for a lot of us is we’ve seen TransLink be able to handle single-tracking situations before and it typically doesn’t have this kind of delay.”

During the service disruption, Jill Drews with TransLink recommended passengers to avoid the Expo Line altogether. She also suggested commuters take the bus instead, whenever possible.

There was no SkyTrain disruption between Waterfront and Nanaimo Stations, nor between Metrotown and King George/Production Way-University Stations.
