Teen killed at Coquitlam intersection mourned

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) — Friends and family members continue to mourn the death of a 13-year-old girl who was killed in a car crash at Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent earlier this week.

Neighbours have said speed at that intersection can be an issue.

Five children were standing on a traffic island at around 3 p.m. on March 25, RCMP say, when a grey Dodge Charger, travelling southbound on Mariner Way with the intention of turning left onto Riverview, collided with a black BMW travelling northbound on Mariner.

Two of the children, 13-year-old Deborah Seol and a six-year-old boy, were hit. Seol died in hospital of her injuries.

Richard Stewart stopped by the memorial for Seol on March 29. He says her death is a devastating blow to the community, and for those who knew the aspiring athlete.

“Really an outpouring of the emotion, the scar that our community is facing,” he says.

While parents have called for safety improvements to be made at the intersection, Coquitlam’s mayor says he’s waiting to hear from the RCMP to find out exactly what happened at the busy intersection.

“That said, the RCMP and our engineering department will work together,” he said. “And when that investigation is completed, our traffic engineers examine those very carefully, because we can always improve, and we want to make certain, as much as possible, we remove those risks that can be removed.”

Stewart says the site has a low number of collisions, according to ICBC.
